History of Rothmann’s
Records indicate that the current Rothmann’s Steakhouse building has been in existence since 1820. It is not until July of 1907 that the steakhouse, as well as the Inn, was purchased by Charles & Franziska Rothmann. The restaurant officially opened on August 10, 1907 and Franziska agreed to do all the cooking”until we serve our first 100 Sunday Dinners, and then hire a chef.” She continued cooking far past the 100 Sundays until the birth of her last child.

The wonderful cooking of Franziska Rothmann and the hospitality of Charles Rothmann soon made the restaurant a favorite dining spot and meeting place for many social & political groups.  The word about Franziska’s  cooking spread rapidly and one of the early patrons was President Theodore Roosevelt who would ride over on horseback with his family to savor the excellent fare of the restaurant. In no time at all, it became formally known as The House of Eats”.

Rothmann’s continued doing business as usual through throughout the prohibition Era and now, the three sons Paul, Peter and Charles Jr. began taking a more active role in running the restaurant. Paul was the main host for many years, greeting each guest as they entered, just as his Father had done before him. Paul was an active member of several clubs and became very well known to many socialites, politicians, and entertainers who frequented the restaurant. Most of the biggest names in entertainment dined there at one time or another, including Elizabeth Taylor, bob Hope and Richard Burton.

In 1970, a business owned by the famous composer Burt Bacharach and his partners approached the Rothmann family. They promised that the restaurant would be run in the tradition of the Rothmann family. Thus, Rothmann’s changed it name to Burt Bacharach’s. Burt and his wife, actress Angie Dickinson were frequently greeting guest at the door and ensuring the Rothmann’s legacy would continue.

Burt Bacharach and his partners sold the restaurant and Inn during the 1980’s. Since that time the name has been changed back to Rothmann’s and is now owned and operated by the Sbarro and Missano Family. But still today, three things remain constant, the service, hospitality and delicious food that the Rothmann Family started over 100 years ago.
